Alun Owen comenzó a trabajar en el guion original a finales del otoño pasado. El productor Walter Shenson y el director Richard Lester vieron a sus nuevas estrellas de cine trabajar durante Navidad y Año Nuevo en el escenario del 'Astoria' de Finsbury Park en Londres. John y Paul comenzaron a recopilar una colección de nuevas composiciones para la banda sonora mientras los Beatles se presentaban en el 'Olympia' de París el pasado enero. Se hizo evidente que no se debían introducir más de seis canciones nuevas a través de la banda sonora de la película. Aunque la voz de George Harrison es muy evidente a lo largo de este álbum, la actividad vocal solista en la segunda cara se comparte entre los compositores de las canciones de John y Paul. Paul se encarga de la letra de Things We Said Today y se le escucha a dúo con John en I'll Cry Instead. El tercer álbum de los Beatles en menos de dieciocho meses se lanzó el 10 de julio de 1964 para acompañar la llegada a los cines de su primera película. El rodaje de A Hard Day's Night había comenzado apenas ocho días después de regresar de su primer viaje a Estados Unidos, cuando tres apariciones en The Ed Sullivan Show aseguraron que la Beatlemanía arrasa el país. En la primera semana de abril de 1964, todos los cinco sencillos del Top 100 de Billboard fueron de los Beatles, con otras siete de sus canciones en la lista. "Can't Buy Me Love" es la primera grabación de A Hard Day's Night. Cuando el grupo estaba en París para una temporada de tres semanas de conciertos en el Teatro Olympia, visitaron los estudios EMI Pathé Marconi para grabar versiones en alemán de dos éxitos recientes: "I Want To Hold Your Hand" y "Can't Buy Me Love" y su siguiente sencillo, "She Loves You". Esta sesión de los Beatles, el 29 de enero de 1964, fue la única vez que el grupo grabó en un estudio fuera del Reino Unido

A su regreso de una gira promocional de dos semanas por EE. UU., el grupo grabó rápidamente canciones para su próxima película en cuatro días de sesiones en Abbey Road, entre el 25 de febrero y el 1 de marzo. Habían prescindido de la grabación de doble pista de sus dos álbumes anteriores y ahora utilizaban grabadoras de cinta de cuatro pistas, lo que permitía una flexibilidad mucho mayor.
