NOTAS HISTÓRICAS

El duodécimo y último álbum de los Beatles se lanzó en el Reino Unido el 8 de mayo de 1970 para coincidir con la llegada a los cines ese mismo mes de su último largometraje, Let It Be. La lujosa versión británica presentaba el LP en una caja con un libro brillante de fotografías y diálogos transcritos de los ensayos y sesiones del álbum. Estos tuvieron lugar en enero de 1969 en los estudios de cine de Twickenham y en el estudio del sótano de la sede de Apple en el West End de Londres. 

Aparte del lanzamiento de «Get Back» y «Don't Let Me Down» en un sencillo en enero, las grabaciones de enero permanecieron inéditas en 1969. Durante el verano, el grupo regresó a su hogar creativo en los estudios de EMI y centró sus energías en un nuevo álbum. Cuando se lanzó Abbey Road en septiembre, se escuchó a The Beatles en una producción impecable, resultado de su habitual y minuciosa grabación multipista con el productor George Martin.

Let It Be... Naked se lanzó en 2003 y presenta remezclas y tomas alternativas de las sesiones de enero de 1969 sin las sobregrabaciones supervisadas por Phil Spector.

Con cada álbum sucesivo, la música de los Beatles había progresado a la par con los avances en la tecnología de grabación; desarrollos que a menudo se hicieron como resultado directo de la búsqueda constante de nuevos sonidos y arreglos más complejos por parte del grupo y su productor George Martin. Pero en enero de 1969, los Beatles decidieron volver a lo básico tanto en su enfoque musical como en su forma de trabajar en el estudio. Su intención era hacer un disco tan sencillo como cuando empezaron en Abbey Road: tocando en directo y capturado directamente en cinta con pocos cambios en el sonido procedente del estudio. 

A partir del 2 de enero, ensayaron en los estudios de cine de Twickenham para un concierto en vivo televisado. Cuando este plan finalmente fue descartado, los Beatles se reunieron en su propio estudio en el sótano de su sede de Apple en el número 3 de Savile Row en Londres. Mientras grababan allí, se mantuvieron fieles al principio de una actuación en vivo con la regla de no usar efectos de estudio ni sobregrabar instrumentos o voces adicionales. Dos caras nuevas estuvieron presentes en estas sesiones: el teclista Billy Preston y el ingeniero independiente Glyn Johns, quien había trabajado recientemente con los Rolling Stones.

Grabando con equipo prestado de EMI, su trabajo en el estudio de Apple comenzó el 22 de enero y continuó hasta el 31 de enero de 1969. Al final de la primera semana de sesiones, habían completado 'For You Blue', 'Get Back' y la cara B 'Don't Let Me Down'. La mayoría de las demás canciones de 'Let It Be' se grabaron durante los dos últimos días del mes.

El 30 de enero, los Beatles desafiaron el clima invernal para un concierto inesperado a la hora del almuerzo en la azotea de su edificio de oficinas. Las grabaciones finalmente se publicaron después de que el productor Phil Spector, comenzando desde cero, remezclara, editara y compilara completamente Let It Be en poco más de una semana. Conocido por su distintivo estilo de producción 'Muro de Sonido', decidió darle a tres de las canciones sobregrabaciones orquestales. Estas se hicieron en una sola sesión el 1 de abril de 1970 y fueron grabadas por el ingeniero Peter Bown. Como ninguna de las canciones tenía pistas libres para sobre grabar, en cada caso, la cinta de ocho pistas, junta para crear espacio para la orquesta, se copió a una segunda cinta mientras se mezclaban simultáneamente algunas de las pistas.
