NOTAS HISTORICAS 

El sexto álbum de los Beatles se lanzó en el Reino Unido el 3 de diciembre de 1965. Solo habían transcurrido cuatro meses desde su álbum anterior, Help!, y durante ese tiempo habían realizado una gira trascendental por Estados Unidos y Canadá, que incluyó un concierto récord para 55600 fans en el Shea Stadium de Nueva York. Después de descansar durante seis semanas, los Beatles comenzaron las sesiones para un álbum planeado para contener solo material de composición propia.

Había once canciones de John y Paul, dos de George y una canción con el crédito único de composición de Lennon-McCartney-Starkey para Ringo que sería, 'What Goes On'. También grabaron el sencillo 'Day Tripper' y 'We Can Work Out' en ese momento, que se publicó en Parlophone el mismo día que se lanzó Rubber Soul. Su primer sencillo de doble cara A y su nuevo álbum les dieron a los Beatles el número uno en Gran Bretaña en sencillos y álbumes por tercera Navidad consecutiva. Rubber Soul se mantuvo en la cima durante nueve semanas de sus 42 semanas de permanencia en la lista de álbumes. 

Las elegantes fotografías de Robert Freeman habían aparecido en las portadas de sus álbumes desde el segundo LP With The Beatles. Su distintiva foto de portada para Rubber Soul surgió por un feliz accidente cuando proyectaba diapositivas de sus fotos en una tarjeta del tamaño de un LP. Cuando la tarjeta se inclinó un poco hacia atrás, las caras de los Beatles parecían ligeramente estiradas y esa fue la imagen seleccionada por el grupo. Es su primer álbum que no presenta la palabra Beatles en la portada.

Por primera vez, el lanzamiento en E. U. duplicó exactamente la portada de un LP británico de los Beatles, pero, como de costumbre, Capitol Records modificó la lista de canciones. Se añadieron dos canciones de la segunda cara de la versión británica de Help! a diez de las cuatro canciones del álbum  se incluyeron en el LP “Yesterday And Today” lanzado seis meses después. La versión estadounidense de Rubber Soul alcanzó el número uno en las primeras semanas de enero de 1966 y se mantuvo en la cima durante seis semanas. Tuvo una impresionante carrera inicial en las listas durante 51 semanas.

Este álbum marcó un punto de inflexión en la actitud de los Beatles, no solo en cuanto al tiempo necesario para el trabajo en el estudio, sino también en relación con el momento en que se realizaban las sesiones.

La práctica habitual había sido programar las sesiones de 10:00 a 13:00, de 14:30 a 17:30 y de 19:00 a 22:00. Desde la grabación de Beatles For Sale en adelante, el grupo abandonó las mañanas y sus sesiones nocturnas se volvieron más largas de lo habitual. Mientras hacían Rubber Soul, dedicaron aún más tiempo a perfeccionar sus canciones y, cuando esto se combinó con una fecha límite apremiante para completar el LP, las sesiones a menudo se extendían hasta la madrugada.

Desde la escritura de las canciones el 12 de octubre hasta la sesión de mezcla final el 15 de noviembre de 1965, se pasaron cien horas de grabación en el estudio. Las últimas horas de reconocimiento continuaron desde las 7:00 a. m. del día siguiente. Los Beatles terminaron «Girl» y «Wor't See Me» y completaron los doblajes de «Wait» y «I'm Looking Through You».

Al igual que con su LP anterior Help!, fue suficiente para grabar todas las canciones en cinta de cuatro pistas excepto una. A las 7:00 p.m. del 3 de noviembre, los Beatles comenzaron la sesión de «Michelle» grabando guitarras en la pista uno y la voz principal en la pista dos. Los coros se sobre grabaron en la pista tres y luego se grabaron en una pista doble en la cuarta.

Para crear espacio para más sobre grabaciones, este 'master' de cuatro pistas se copió a una nueva cinta. La sección rítmica y la voz principal se transfirieron a las pistas uno y dos, pero los coros de las otras dos pistas se mezclaron y grabaron solo en la pista tres de la nueva cinta. La pista libre se utilizó para sobre grabar un bajo, una guitarra eléctrica y una acústica. Este procedimiento de 'rebote' de pistas se hizo mucho más frecuente en sus futuras grabaciones.

Desde su primera sesión en 1962, el hombre en la mesa de mezclas había sido el ingeniero Norman Smith. En tres años y medio de grabación y mezcla del grupo, había sido responsable de seis álbumes y once sencillos lanzados en el Reino Unido. Su última cita en el estudio con los Beatles fue la sesión final de grabación de Rubber Soul, que duró toda la noche, los días 11 y 12, antes de que el álbum estuviera disponible en noviembre de 1965, solo tres semanas después de su lanzamiento. 

Rubber Soul se publicó en una época en la que solo se vendían a un pequeño número de entusiastas de la alta fidelidad se vendían discos estéreo a un pequeño número de personas, por lo que la mezcla en mono tenía prioridad sobre la versión estéreo. George Martin decidió dar a Rubber Soul un nuevo lanzamiento debut en CD en 1987.
